What is GYROKINESIS®?

GYROKINESIS® methodology, also known as "Yoga in Motion," is the heart and soul of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. Utilizing the same principles as GYROTONIC® exercise, it is a great way to realize all of the benefits of the GYROTONIC work, but without the use of equipment and in a group setting like a Yoga class. The work is similar to Kundalini Yoga, which links poses dynamically like a dance while focusing on specific breathwork patterns.

What is a GYROKINESIS® class like?

In GYROKINESIS classes fluid, rhythmic, and spiraling movements are performed seated on stools, standing, and on the floor. The work can be adapted to just about any fitness level.

This system is great for people who travel; who are looking for something to augment their Yoga, Pilates, GYROTONIC, or exercise program; or who are looking for a workout they can also practice at home, since all you  need is a chair and a mat or soft floor.

We advise taking one or two private GYROTONIC or GYROKINESIS lessons prior to taking a group class. This work may be very different from anything you may have done before. It's good to have an understanding of some basic concepts before jumping into a group class environment.

The effect this work has on the body-mind-spirit can be very profound, so we hope you'll give it a try for several classes. It will change the way you move in your body!

The History of GYROKINESIS®

GYROKINESIS® (formerly known at Yoga for Dancers) was developed in the mid 1980’s by Juliu Horvath, a Hungarian raised in Romania and a former ballet dancer with the New York City Opera. After experiencing many personal struggles and chronic illnesses, GYROKINESIS inventor Juliu Horvathalong with a dance career ending injury, Juliu spent many years in self-exploration and study of Yoga, acupuncture, and meditation. These experiences not only led him to true healing, but he was also inspired to create a movement system that offers the same benefits as yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but is not derived from these other modalities. Some of the hallmarks of GYROKINESIS® exercises are the fluidity of the movements and the ease with which one can perform them.

GYROKINESIS® exercises allow one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all other joint articulations.

This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movement. These movements stimulate the body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.

Those who practice
GYROKINESIS® exercises tend to be more relaxed in their daily lives and can move with increased flexibility and ease. Try a class. Your mind, body and spirit will thank you!
